Abstract
PNEUMONIA IS the most frequent infectious cause of death and the sixth leading overall cause of death in the United States.1 Because of the high mortality and corresponding high hospital admission rates and costs of care for patients with pneumonia,2 pneumonia care is one of the targeted concerns of the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services' (CMS) Health Care Quality Improvement Program (HCQIP).3 A major aim of HCQIP is to analyze patterns of medical practice and outcomes to identify opportunities for improvement in the quality of care.3This publication has 10 references indexed in Scilit:
