Abstract
Mycobacterium kansasii was cultured from specimens from outpatients from this hospital who are known to have had prior infections with M. tuberculosis and who had clinically inactive disease at the time of isolation of the photochromogenic cultures. Cultures from such patients were compared with strains of M. kansasii considered to have caused pulmonary disease in man. Statistical analyses of tests performed suggest that there are two varieties of M. kansasii, each with a different clinical significance in man. Tests are described which aid in distinguishing between the two varieties. Keywords
