Abstract
Prepn. of a purified culture medium for Escherichia coli is descr. In such a medium, selenite and molybdate, as well as Fe, are required for production of formic dehydrogenase. These factors are effective only if present in the growth medium, and have no effect on washed suspensions. Suspensions of cells oxidize glucose rapidly, whether they contain an active formic dehydrogenase or not. Selenite is not replaceable by selenate, tellurite or tellurate. Molybdate is not replaceable by vanadate, chrornate, tungstate or uranyl ions. If the medium contains nitrate, tungstate competitively antagonizes the effect of molybdate. Tungstate is without effect in nitrate-free media.
