Abstract
Two types of total knee replacement, Walldius and Geomedic, are discussed as they relate to component materials, indications for use, surgical techniques involved, and physical therapy management of patients with rheumatoid arthritis. The role of the physical therapist in evaluation and treatment is emphasized. A review of data on forty-two patients (forty-seven operated knees) includes discussion of knee pain, quadriceps “lag,” range of motion, transfer, and ambulation abilities. In the Walldius group, maximum knee flexion took longer to gain, and both groups showed continued improvement in ambulation after discharge, with greater change occurring in the Walldius sample. Keywords
