Abstract
The underlying reasons for initiating this study were twofold: (1) to add to knowledge concerning anabolic steroid use by athletes; and (2) to investigate the effects of anabolic steroids upon strength and lean body mass. Sixteen normal, healthy male students attending Portland State University volunteered as subjects. Their ages ranged from 18–26 years. Each subject was tested for strength and body composition determined before and after submitting to a five week weight training and drug or placebo administration period. The subjects were paired on the basis of initial strength scores and assigned to the experimental or the control group. Psychological control was effected by using a placebo that was identical in appearance to the anabolic steroid, Dianabol. The t test was used to treat difference scores. Results indicated that there was a significant gain within each group in strength and lean body mass. Further analysis indicated that the experimental group (Dianabol) made statistically significant gains over the control group. Regardless of any ethical considerations or the possibility of undesirable physiological side effects the study showed that the supplement of anabolic steroids can increase the strength of healthy males engaged in a strenuous weight training program beyond the strength gain resulting from weight training only. Keywords
