Abstract
The methods of linear response theory are used to determine the power spectra of the electric-field and vibrational-amplitude fluctuations associated with the polaritons which exist at the plane surface between two isotropic dielectric media. A general form of the cross section for inelastic scattering of light in reflection at such a surface is derived and applied to the scattering by surface polaritons. The special case of a crystal which possesses a single lattice resonance is considered and numerical estimates for GaP are obtained. Keywords
