Applications of Flow Cytometry in Surgical Pathology

Abstract
Flow cytometry (FCM) is the simultaneous measurement of several cellular parameters while a suspension of cells flows past a light source. This technology and its clinical applications are discussed. FCM can supply the pathologist with information concerning cellular antigenic phenotype and DNA content, which is useful in establishing a diagnosis, determination of disease prognosis, and follow-up of patients. Specific applications in the evaluation of hematopoietic malignancies and solid tumors are presented.
