A method for the determination of non-haem iron in bone marrow

Abstract
The non-heme iron of bone marrow was determined with dipyridyl reagent and related to the protein content of the marrow. Results obtained with this method were compared to the Prussian-blue staining method. Considerable disagreement may occur between individual results as estimated by the 2 methods because only hemosiderin is stained with acidified potassium ferrocyanide. The total non-heme iron, (ug/100 mg protein), for 4 groups examined were as follows: Control, non-anemic 86 [plus or minus] 34, rheumatoid arthritis 55 [plus or minus] 30, iron deficiency anemia 12 [plus or minus] 5, pernicious anemia 86 [plus or minus] 136.Keywords
