Patients' Plea: Tell Us about Our Sexuality

Abstract
This field study consisted of interviewing 100 general hospitalized patients about their satisfaction with the sex education and counseling they received during their present illness and hospitalization. Findings revealed that only 30% had sex-related topics mentioned to them by health professionals. Less than half were satisfied with these discussions. This article describes the serendipitous findings of conversations with attending physicians which may provide clues to explain their reluctance to educate their patients. Unsolicited discussions with the patients following the interviews indicated that patients are ready to learn more about their sexuality as it relates to their illnesses.
