Chemistry and Function of the Complement System

Abstract
Awareness of the cytolytic complement system and its major role in defense against infection began a century ago. But it has only been in the last half dozen years or so that protein chemistry has advanced to the point at which the specific complement sequences—both the classic and alternate pathways—have been elucidated, and their control mechanisms, their versatility, and their biologic elegance understood.
