Abstract
Adaptation of a gas chromatographic method for valproic acid to a determination using chemical ionization mass spectrometry (CI-MS) is reported. Using the mass spectrometer as a gas chromatographic effluent monitor, valproic acid and paramethadione (an internal standard) concentrations are followed at m/e 145 and 158, respectively. Quantitation is achieved by measurement of the specific chromatographic area attributable to each of these substances. The method offers the advantages of high specificity end reproducibility, with short (less than one minute) chromatographic elution times.
