Abstract
A motivated protocol for the construction of a Hamiltonian density for continuum systems in an Eulerian coordinate system is presented and applied to the case of magnetohydrodynamics. The gauge invariance (i.e., invariance under unphysical transformations) is investigated and the structure of the gauge group evaluated. Keywords
