Polyribosome Content in Young and Aged Wheat Leaves Subjected to Drought

Abstract
The effect of a droughting treatment on the polyribosome content of wheat leaves was markedly different on leaves of different ages. Growing leaves showed a large decrease in their polyribosome population, while fully expanded leaves showed no loss of polyribosomes compared with controls. These results suggest that the large reductions in polyribosome population observed in growing tissues are due to reductions in growth, rather than a direct effect of water stress.
