Abstract
Acrylonitrile slightly stimulated lipid peroxidation in isolated microsomes and exhibited a distinct prooxidative effect in postmitochondrial supernatant containing microsomes and cytoplasm. Acrylonitrile did not form a complex with cytochrome P-450 of spectral types I or II and did not stimulate O2 utilization by microsomes in the presence of NADPH. The hepatotoxic effect of acrylonitrile apparently is due to its property to stimulate formation of lipid peroxides in hepatocytes.
