Toward a Unitary Concept of Gout

Abstract
Why do some individuals with hyperuricemia suffer from severe gout while others with equally high serum uric acid levels remain free of disease? What is the role of the urate crystal in precipitating acute attacks? How do various antigout agents act? How would the ideal antigout drug act? Dr. Seegmiller advances a hypothesis for the pathogenesis of gout which might provide answers to all of these clinically critical questions.
