Abstract
It is shown that the principal non-linear interaction of inviscid inertial modes does not produce a resonant response in the steady geostrophic circulation. The rectified geostrophic flow manifested in a closed rotating container by a periodic excitation seems to result from a combination of viscous and non-linear effects within the boundary layers. Keywords
