Abstract
The development of the periodontal membrane in the molar teeth of rats is described in 3 phases. The follicular phase when the early organization of the fibers is described. There was no evidence for the intermediate plexus or the cushioned hammockligament. The emergence phase when the tooth is at the stage of erupting through the overlying gingival mucosa. The orientation of the transeptal fibers to the proximal surfaces of the teeth was noted during eruption. The functional phase when the principle fibers became denser under the stress of mastication. There was no evidence for a circular band of fibers.
