Abstract
The preparation of the crude githagin (glucoside) is described. It is a typical saponin. A colloidal analysis shows it to be a negatively charged protective colloid with a Zigmondy gold number of 4[long dash]10. From the crude saponin the crystalline prosapogenin (githagin) was secured by hydrolysis; this consisted of needleshaped crystals. By hydrolysis of githagin under pressure, githagenin also separated out in long thin clusters of needleshaped crystals. Acetyl githagenin was prepared and githagenin recovered from it. Githagenxn oxime and githagenin semicarbazon were also prepared. Githa genin was oxidized to githagin acid and the dioxine prepared from this acid. The empirical formula of C28 H44 O4 is suggested for githagenin. From the formation of a crystalline oxine and a semicarbazon, githagenin is thought to have a keto group. The formation of an acetyl derivative points to the presence of 2 hydroxyl groups. Having formed githagin acid from githagenin, the position of the alcohol groups is estimated. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
