Convulsive seizures as the presenting manifestation of intermittent porphyria

Abstract
A case of acute intermittent porphyria is reported. The disease presented as a recurrent, febrile, convulsive disorder without abdominal symptoms. The status epilepticus did not respond to intravenous anesthesia with barbital derivatives. The therapeutic paradox is discussed. Therapy with chlorpromazine and a chelating agent (ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid) was unsatisfactory.
