Abstract
Investigations by Neumann and co-workers (for example Neumann, 1966; Neumann & Elger, 1965) revealed striking abnormalities, e.g. a vagina in the reproductive tract of male offspring of rats injected with the 'anti-androgenic' steroid, cyproterone. Detailed studies by Forsberg, Jacobsohn & Norgren (1968a, b) showed that the vagina (1) ended blindly anteriorly, (2) was sometimes separated from the urethra down to the perineum or (3) opened into the urethra. The ejaculatory ducts terminated at the vaginal anlage. Prostatic and coagulating glands were absent, while small prostatic anlagen and, unexpectedly, seminal vesicles were found to be present. Uterine horns were absent. In our previous work, the injections of cyproterone were begun on day 14 or 15 of pregnancy. Price & Ortiz (1965) reported that the testis begins to secrete androgens when the foetus is about 15 days old.
