Brief Communication: Lymphocyte Response to Mammary Tumor Antigens Free of Mammary Tumor Virus in Relation to Clinical Status 2

Abstract
The lymphocyte blastogenic assay based on increased uptake of 3H-thymidine, was used to demonstrate lymphocyte responses to antigens derived from a syngeneic transplantable, immunogenic tumor (D1-DMBA-3) initiated by dimethylbenz[a] anthracene (DMBA) in mice free of mammary tumor virus (MTV). The extent of the response was related to the clinical condition of the animals. Responses were evoked in splenic lymphocytes from mice with small tumors but not in cells of mice bearing large tumors. Similarly, the nonspecific response to phytohemagglutinin, also abolished in mice with large tumors, suggested the presence of an immunologic anergy. The cellular responses reappeared after surgical tumor removal or sham surgery. Preparations of nonimmunogenic syngeneic tumors (D1-DMBA-2) also induced by DMBA did not stimulate lymphocytes from animals bearing tumors or from those whose tumors had been excised.
