Abstract
In evaluating the condition of oysters 2 methods are prominent. One method, based on a ratio of dried meats to shell cavity volume has not proven entirely satisfactory. Measurement of glycogen content offers a standardized, highly quantitative evaluation. When both of these methods were used on 31 samples of poor quality oysters from Gulf Coast habitats, a correlation coeff. of 0.39 was found. Although only 3 samples of high quality oysters were analyzed, the 2 methods matched so well there is a strong suggestion that in animals of high vigor a good correlation may exist.
