Abstract
Male Friesian calves (12) were weaned at the age of 6 wk. They were distributed into 2 groups 1 wk before weaning. Thereafter for 11 wk the animals received a concentrate feed as well as a protein supplement (67% cooked soybean meal, 32% whey powder and 1% methionine) offered either solid (solid supplement group) or liquid (liquid supplement group). Administration of the supplement in liquid form decreased the urea plasma level (21 mg/100 ml vs. 38, 2 h after the meal). It also increased the blood levels of most of the essential amino acids, especially methionine (3.34 mg methionine/100 ml vs. 0.40, 4 h after the meal). The liquid protein supplement probably arrived directly in the abomasum avoiding degradation within the rumen. The improvement in growth (2.9%) and feed efficiency (4.4%) was not significant. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
