Abstract
The angular distribution of the light scattered from an unpolarized beam by a solution of random coils subjected to shear is calculated. The molecular model considered is a freely draining coil and the light scattering is treated according to Debye. The theory shows that the probability distribution of the segments at finite shear has the symmetry of an ellipsoid whose axial ratio increases with shear. The results derived should allow one to determine the mean square end-to-end distance, its variation with the shear applied and, therefore, the statistical shape of flexible macromolecules and its change by flow. Keywords
