Data are presented on the quantity and behaviour of cadmium involved in the major processes used in the UK steelmaking industry. A mass balance for cadmium in the industry has been produced and the magnitude and environmental importance of discharge s of cadmium‐containing wastes to air, water and land are assessed. No significant environmental pollution problems from cadmium are evident or thought likely to occur, but care should be used in the disposal of certain dusts and slurries from gas‐washing systems.
