Abstract
This study replicated earlier research which suggested a link between the size of the community in which a person is raised and that person's level of communication apprehension. A total of 5,795 public school students (grades K‐12) participated in this study. Results of previous research involving college students were replicated with junior and senior high school groups in the present study, but no relationships between community size and communication apprehension was observed for younger groups. A theory based on the principle of reinforcement and on a postulate of forced adaptation is advanced to explain the findings of the present study and to direct future investigations. Keywords
