Abstract
Pertussis is at present probably one of the commonest of the acute infectious disorders of childhood over the entire civilized world. The period of greatest infectiousness is during the catarrhal stage, although there is no doubt that it can also be transmitted during the paroxysmal stage and period of decline. Our therapeutic armamentarium brings us the best results when applied early in the disease, that is, during the incubation period and catarrhal stage. With these facts in view, it is evident that a diagnostic test, if specific and of a simple enough nature to be generally applied to the early diagnosis of this disease, during the incubation period and catarrhal stage, would be of a distinct advantage.
