Abstract
In sudden death testing, a group of bearings is divided into a number of equal-sized subgroups and tested only until the first failure occurs in each subgroup. General procedures based on maximum likelihood estimates are given for setting confidence limits on L10 life from sudden death test results, and the necessary tabular values are given for some sample and subgroup sizes. Comparisons are made of the total expected test time and the precision in determining L10 by (a) a sudden death test and by (b) a conventional endurance test having the same total sample size and number of failures.
