Abstract
A germination study drawn from a research program on drought tolerance of grain sorghum (Sorghum bicolor L. Moench) was conducted with seeds exposed to six concentrations of polyethylene glycol ranging from 0 to 12% in weight. Eleven cultivars of this crop — M35-1, CE-90, 69-4, NK300, G393, C-42Y, Meloland, RS610, NB9776K, X4027 and RS626 — were involved. The plant material was kept in the dark and at a temperature of 28 C during 18 h. Increasing the concentration of the chemical resulted in poorer germination along with marked differences among the cultivars. CE-90, 69-4, RS626, NK300 and C-42Y showed better germination performance at the highest stress level than the other cultivars. Keywords
