Abstract
Hexamethonium (C6) has been administered continuously for 1-5 mos. by subcut. injn. to 32 hypertensive patients. 14 had malignant hypertension. Six have undergone a remission of the malignant phase while 4 others have exhibited remissions with the addition of 1- hydrazino-phthalazine (C-5968) administered orally midway between the doses of C6. In 16 patients with less severe degrees of sustained hypertension, 10 have shown sustained reductions of arterial pressure after hexamethonium, either used alone or in combination with C-5968. Methods for preventing tolerance and overcoming undesirable side effects are presented and the advantages as well as the limitations of hexamethonium therapy are discussed. Keywords
