Abstract
Low-dose heparin administration appears to be a relatively safe and effective form of prophylaxis more ideal for public health purposes in [human] venous thromboembolism prophylaxis than anything previously introduced. If used widely, it not only offers medicine the opportunity to halt the annual increase in deaths attributable to acute pulmonary embolism but also provides a means by which this problem can be controlled in an effective manner. Heparin is easy to administer, appears to be effective and relatively safe, requires no laboratory monitoring, and can be made readily available to those at risk. The rationale for its use, efficacy, safety, indications and nonindications are discussed. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
