Abstract
Twenty‐eight pre‐school children, identified as having either a high or a low degree of interest in books and stories at nursery school, were compared by means of observations, tests, interviews with parents about activities at home, and questionnaires for staff about activities at school. All the high‐interest children had considerable experience of stories at home, but this was true for only some of the low‐interest children. No children were found who showed high interest at school but had little experience at home. As a group the low‐interest children participated in more activities at nursery school, but for shorter periods, and spent a significantly greater proportion of their time on ‘non‐specific activity’. The implications of the findings for the structuring of children's activities in the nursery school are discussed. Keywords
