Abstract
No fundamental change in the symptomatic treatment of diabetes insipidus has occurred since 1913, when von der Velden1in Germany and Farini and Ceccaroni2in Italy, working independently, discovered the prompt, almost specific though temporary, control of excessive thirst and polyuria in patients suffering from diabetes insipidus following subcutaneous injections of extracts from the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland. Although the rôle of the posterior lobe in regulating normal water metabolism is still obscure, its antidiuretic effect with the adjustment of water balance and the correction of dehydration in diabetes insipidus has been abundantly confirmed.3 In seeking to remove the necessity for daily, painful hypodermic injections, attempts have been made to obtain the specific effect of the posterior lobe by the enteral administration of extracts4and of fresh glands.5All have proved totally ineffective or so variable in their action as to be impracticable. Keywords
