Abstract
To the Editor: The article by Prout and colleagues (Nov. 12 issue)* describing photodynamic therapy of bladder carcinoma presents exciting and important new information. Somewhat troubling, however, in this study of an experimental treatment for cancer is the absence of any mention of the provision of informed consent by study participants or of review by an institutional review board. The article states that the patients were selected by local physicians and that all those who met the protocol criteria were given the experimental therapy. One might infer from this statement that a patient's consent is not required before any treatment, . . .Keywords
