Heterohemoantibodies in Inbred Strains of Mice

Abstract
Summary: Natural hemagglutinins for sheep and chicken red cells were investigated in mice of 13 inbred strains. In confirmation of earlier work, considerable differences in antibodies were found, depending on the strain tested. Agglutinins for sheep and chicken red cells are independent of each other, as shown by in vitro and in vivo technics. The possible causes and significance of the differences in natural hemoantibodies were discussed, particularly with regard to antigenic composition of mouse tissues, operation of genetic factors, and innate immune response. High incidence of natural sheep agglutinins were found in two low-tumor strains, whereas low incidence and low mean titers were present in 6 high-tumor and 5 low-tumor strains. High mean titers of natural chicken agglutinins were observed in 6 low-tumor strains, whereas low mean titers were obtained in 5 out of 6 high-tumor strains.
