Abstract
In the epidermis of frogs (Rana clamitans, R. sylvatica, R. catesbeiana, R. pipiens, and 1 species of Hyla) and frog tadpoles are greatly elongated melanophores that are very different in general shape from those in the dermis. Epidermal melanophores up to 246 [mu] in length have been found in frog tadpoles. Anastomosing of epidermal melanophores is common. "Expansion" and "contraction" are accomplished by the migration of pigment granules into and out of permanent processes. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
