THE NATURE OF THE ALDOSTERONE-STIMULATING FACTOR IN DOG KIDNEYS*

Abstract
Intravenous injections of small doses of renin extracts of dog kidneys or synthetic angiotensin II stimulated aldosterone secretion in hypophysectomized, nephrectomized dogs. Secretion of 17-OH corticoids was not stimulated. A slight increase in corticosterone and blood pressure did occur. Large doses of renin and angiotensin II stimulated 17-OH corticoids as well as corticosterone and aldosterone secretion. In contrast, small doses of ACTH stimulated 17-OH corticoids and corticosterone secretion even more than large doses of renin but did not increase aldosterone secretion. Injections of extracts of dog anterior pituitaries simulated ACTH injections. Control tissue extracts and norepinephrine infusions had no effect on aldosterone secretion. These data suggest that the aldosterone stimulating factor in dog kidneys is renin.
