Abstract
Tissue culture studies by means of phase-contrast microscopy of plaque, one of the benign precursor lesions of bovine ocular squamous cell carcinoma, grown in specially designed tissue culture chamber, are described. The cells grown in vitro showed a number of nuclear and cytoplasmic changes which may appear as early as the 5th passage. One hundred lesions were studied and 53 were maintained for 1-5 weeks, 7 for 5-10 weeks, 28 from 10-20 weeks, and 5 for 20-40 weeks. Some of the cultures were maintained for 45 passages. In the cytoplasm of cells grown in vitro strongly basophilic inclusion-like bodies were observed. The nature of these changes is being studied. Keywords
