Abstract
Dynamic polarization and proton relaxation in asphalt solutions have been studied as a function of solute concentration, temperature, and oxygen concentration. The observed results are consistent with the Korringa—Seevers—Torrey theory of spin pumping in diluted paramagnetic systems. The reciprocal signal enhancement is proportional to reciprocal asphalt concentration. The signal enhancement is directly proportional to the fraction of proton relaxation arising from the electron. The electron dominates the proton relaxation in the surface regions around the free radical. The observed data indicate a small radical molecule in asphalt. The electron—proton correlation frequency in the surface layer around the asphaltene radical is found to be about 10 Mc.Keywords
