The Family's Role in Sex Education: Implications for Educators

Abstract
This study of 1,081 university students sought to identify the family's participation in the sex education of its children and youth. Respondents completed questionnaires that assessed which sources of information were generally significant, and then which sources were informative about particular aspects of sex and sexuality. The analysis focused on differences between females and males. The peer network and the mass media were identified as significant information sources. For the most part, the family's role was limited. Implications for educators are drawn in regard to the nature of education on controversial topics, the role of intimate and impersonal educators, the varying experiences of males and females, and the role of the family.
