Abstract
Calculations of the photoionization cross sections for the excited (6s6p) P state of ytterbium have been performed at the Hartree-Fock and Hartree-Slater levels. The results for P show reasonable agreement (at the edge of error bars) with a recent experiment at a single energy. Significant differences between the triplet and singlet cases exist and arise primarily due to the effects of exchange on the initial-state wave functions.
