The action of sulphites on the cysteine disulphide linkages in wool

Abstract
The influence of temp., time, and conc. on the reaction between wool and solns. of Na bi-sulphite was studied. The maximum number of the di-sulfide linkages of wool that will react to give thiol and S-cysteine sulfonate groups appears to be 1/3 of the total. The residual disulfide-S in wool that has been boiled with alkaline solns. of pH 8 and higher reacts with Na bisulfite in the same proportion as the disulfide-S of normal wool. The cortical cells, isolated by digestion of wool with papain in the presence of Na bisulfite contain more organic S than the fiber as a whole.
