Abstract
It is shown that the natural frequencies and mode shapes of plates with a wide variety of support conditions can be accurately determined by a Rayleigh-Ritz analysis using Lagrange multipliers. The internal stresses and bending moments arising at the supports are also determined directly by the method. In the first part, emphasis is placed on the role played by the constraint or support conditions in the convergence of the method. It is seen that accurate results can be obtained with relatively little computational effort. In the second part an example is studied for which independent results are available, and the analysis is extended to more general support configurations.
