FACTORS INFLUENCING THE GROWTH OF A STABLE L FORM OF PROTEUS MIRABILIS

Abstract
The optimum agar concentration for the growth of the Lform investigated (Proteus L9) is about 0. 75%. Serum does not seem to be a growth factor for this L form in the usual sense of this word. Instead it probably inhibits poisonous substances in the medium, which in the absence of serum causes the cell membrane to disintegrate. The number of viable elements in cultures of Proteus L9, as estimated by the pour plate or the streak plate method, is considerably lower than the corresponding number of microscopically observable bodies.
