Abstract
This paper discusses the support processes developed for first year Business School students at Southampton Institute to improve the quality of their learning experience. This is discussed within the context of the rapid changes which have occurred in the higher education environment during the last five years. Handy's theory of life‐long learning is taken as the model against which the teaching and learning programme is developed, with particular emphasis placed on the student as a resource and on independent learning. Keywords
