Incidence of bunt in the 1973 New Zealand wheat crop: A note

Abstract
Grain samples of eight wheat varieties from each of the 1970 to 1973 harvests were tested by a modified washings test for the presence of teliospores of the bunt or stinking smut fungi Tilletia caries and Tillelia foetida. The variety ‘Aotea’ contained significantly more toliospores per sample than any other variety and was chosen for tests to indicate the incidence of bunt in the 1973 harvest. A total of 248 ‘Aotea’ wheat samples from the wheat growing counties of New Zealand were tested for Tilletia teliospores. Two samples from the North Island, six from North Canterbury, four from Mid Canterbury, six from South Canterbury, and four from Southland were infected, the level of infection averaging 9% of samples examined. All teliospores detected were those of Tilletia caries.
