Abstract
Homodyne beat noise effects associated with multiple paths and reflections in optical networks are examined in terms of the potential impact on system performance. Essential statistics are identified which enable an upper bound on error probability to be formulated. Conditions are identified relating to the existence of an error probability floor. Illustrative system results are presented, demonstrating the application of the techniques presented. Keywords
