Time-Lapse Cinemicrophotographic Studies of Cell Division Patterns of Human Diploid Fibroblasts (WI-38) during their in Vitro Lifespan

Abstract
Since Hayflick and Moorhead (1) and Hayflick (2) reported on the finite lifespan of cultured diploid fibroblasts, researchers have used these cell types to study aging at the cellular level. The decline in proliferative capacity of diploid fibroblasts with increasing in vitro age has been attributed to a gradual increase in the proportion of non-dividing cells (3,4,5,8).
