Action of Substituted Salicylaldehydes on Bacteria and Fungi

Abstract
Two methods were evolved for dissolving salicylaldehydes at a suitable pH and in a soln. which contributed no antibacterial activity: the 1st method involved mixing the free aldehyde with an excess of borax and making an aqueous soln. from this mixture; the 2d made use of the aldehyde-bisulfite compd. in conjunction with an equimolecular amt. of NaOH. Antiseptic testing was then done by serial tube dilutions. Several of the compds. were promising as antiseptics against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. Several of the compds. also exhibited marked fungistatic activity against Tricho-phyton mentagrophytes. They were also fungicidal against this organism.
