Abstract
The Raman spectra of AlCl3·KCl (solid and liquid) and AlCl3·NaCl (liquid) were recorded using a Cary 81 Raman spectrophotometer. Both solid and liquid AlCl3·KCl exhibit nine Raman lines. For liquid AlCl3·NaCl, only four Raman lines were observed. Polarization measurements indicate the existence of the complex species AlCl4—, with a distorted tetrahedral structure (C2v) in solid and liquid AlCl3·KCl and a regular tetrahedral structure (Td) in AlCl3·NaCl. The force constants for AlCl4— ion were calculated using a generalized valence force. Keywords
